The Nigerian Senate has mandated its Committee on National Security and Intelligence to investigate the worsening security situation in parts of Adamawa State, following a series of violent attacks on rural communities.
The resolution was adopted on Tuesday, with lawmakers directing urgent intervention in affected areas within Lamurde Local Government Area, including Kwah, Gyakan, Rigange, Waduku, and Chobo.
As part of its response, the Senate also instructed the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA) to immediately provide relief materials to residents displaced by the violence.
The decision followed a motion raised under matters of urgent public importance by Binus Yaroe, who highlighted the escalating crisis in the region.
Presenting the motion, Yaroe noted that the last quarter of 2026 had seen repeated clashes between Bachama and Chobo communities, resulting in loss of lives, destruction of property, and widespread displacement.
He also recalled a December 2025 incident in which armed personnel allegedly opened fire on unarmed women in Rigange during a protest over continued attacks.
The Senate said its investigation would focus on uncovering the root causes of the violence and recommending lasting solutions to prevent further bloodshed.
Meanwhile, fresh violence has continued to heighten concerns. Gunmen on Sunday attacked communities in Gombi Local Government Area, reportedly killing at least 29 people.
Eyewitness accounts said the attackers struck during a football match at a primary school in Guyaku at about 5:00 p.m., firing indiscriminately and causing panic among residents.
“Yesterday evening [Sunday], youths organised a football match between two communities, Zangula and another village,” a resident, Musa Guyaku, said.
“Suddenly, gunmen invaded our community and were shooting sporadically, killing two people sitting in a hut and burning down the hut.”
The Senate reiterated its commitment to ensuring accountability and restoring peace, stressing that its probe would guide comprehensive measures to address the recurring crisis and support affected communities.
