Police hand over officers for prosecution vetting

The Nigeria Police Force has transferred officers linked to the alleged extrajudicial killing of Mene Ogidi in Effurun, Delta State, to the Attorney General of the Federation for vetting and possible prosecution.
The move followed the confirmation of their dismissal by the Police Service Commission (PSC).
The case involves personnel accused of the fatal shooting of the unarmed civilian, Mene Ogidi.
The Force said the action marks a further step toward criminal accountability after internal disciplinary measures were concluded.
Earlier, the Police leadership had ordered the immediate dismissal of ASP Nuhu Usman and other officers found to have participated in the incident.
The directive came after the conclusion of disciplinary hearings conducted by the Force Disciplinary Committee and the Orderly Room Tribunal at the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
According to the Force, the dismissals were initially subject to ratification by the Police Service Commission, in line with statutory requirements governing disciplinary action within the service.
It also maintained that all officers found culpable would face prosecution under criminal law.
Providing an update on the matter, the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Placid, confirmed that all procedural requirements had now been completed, paving the way for formal prosecution.
He further disclosed that the driver who transported a parcel from Yenagoa, alongside two members of a vigilante group allegedly connected to the incident, are currently at large and remain wanted.
Reaffirming its stance, the Nigeria Police Force stressed that it would not protect any officer found guilty of wrongdoing.
“The Force does not shield officers who violate the law. No rank, no position, and no circumstance will be permitted to place any officer above accountability,” it stated.
The police said efforts were ongoing to apprehend the fleeing suspects as the case proceeds toward prosecution.
