Abaja accepts honorary doctorate, calls for education reform

His Royal Majesty, Friday Odini Abaja, king of Umukwata in Ukwuani Local Government Area of Delta, has called for renewed investment in education and stronger accountability in governance after receiving an honorary Doctorate Degree in Business Administration from Delta State University.

Speaking during his acceptance address, Abaja expressed gratitude to the university’s leadership for the recognition, describing it as a privilege he accepted with “a heart filled with gratitude, humility, and a deep sense of honour.”

He thanked the governing council, Senate, and academic community of the institution, noting that the honour reflected not only personal recognition but also the collective efforts of his people.

“As a traditional ruler, I receive this honour not for myself alone, but on behalf of my kingdom and my people.

“In our culture, we say, ‘one hand does not lift a heavy load, ” he said.

Abaja emphasised the importance of education in national development, describing it as the foundation of any progressive society.

He reaffirmed his belief that educating a child amounts to empowering a generation, adding that this philosophy has guided his support for community development and youth empowerment initiatives.

He however, urged the council to do more to strengthen the education sector at both state and national levels.

“I respectfully call on our political leaders and policymakers to do more in raising and improving the standard of education within the state and across our nation,” he said, stressing that education must be treated as a core pillar of sustainable development rather than an afterthought.

The traditional ruler also raised concerns over corruption, warning that mismanagement of public resources has continued to undermine progress in the education sector.

“We must also confront the reality that corruption has, over time, hindered meaningful progress and impacted negatively on the quality of education.

“When resources meant for education are not properly utilized, it is the future of our children that is placed at risk, ” he said.

He called for greater transparency, accountability, and integrity in the management of educational resources.

Abaja pledged continued support for Delta State University, saying he would see the honour as a call to deeper service.

“I consider it both a privilege and a duty to contribute to the growth, development, and advancement of the university,” he said.

Addressing students, he encouraged discipline, perseverance, and focus, noting that success requires resilience.

“The journey to greatness is not without its trials, but perseverance, discipline, and integrity will always lead to honour,” he said.

He concluded by dedicating himself to continued service in education and community development, while thanking the university for the recognition and wishing the institution sustained growth and excellence.
