Oyo teachers protest abduction, killing of colleague

Teachers in Ogbomoso, Oyo State, on Monday downed tools and staged a peaceful protest to the office of the Teaching Service Commission (TESCOM) over the abduction of school staff and pupils in Oriire Local Government Area, which led to the killing of one teacher.

The demonstrators, who marched with placards bearing various messages, called on federal and state authorities to urgently intensify rescue efforts for those still held captive by armed abductors.

They also demanded stronger security presence in schools and safer learning environments for both teachers and students.

The protest followed a recent attack in which gunmen invaded schools in the Oriire area, abducting teachers, students, and pupils, an incident that has sparked widespread concern across the education sector and the state at large.

Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde had earlier confirmed that one of the abducted teachers was killed during the attack, while seven teachers and an unspecified number of pupils remain in captivity.

He expressed condolences to the bereaved family and assured that security agencies are intensifying efforts to rescue the remaining victims.

The governor also appealed for calm, noting that both kinetic and non-kinetic strategies are being deployed to address the situation and ensure the safe return of all abducted persons.
