NUJ FCT unveils health drive for journalists
The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), FCT Council, has introduced a health intervention programme aimed at addressing common medical challenges affecting journalists in the Federal Capital Territory.
The initiative was announced by the council’s Vice Chairman, Mr Yahaya Ndambabo, during the closing ceremony of the 2026 NUJ-FCT Press Week held in Abuja.
Ndambabo explained that the programme formed part of activities lined up for the Press Week, which featured a medical outreach, a 10-kilometre health walk, a quiz competition for schools, and several educational lectures.
“The Press Week began with a medical outreach where we partnered with Nizamiye Hospital and over 200 journalists were tested and given various medications,” he said.
He added that medical reports from the outreach were currently being reviewed to identify prevalent health conditions among journalists and develop targeted interventions.
“We are receiving reports from the hospital and we are reviewing them to know the common ailment our members face and to know how we can address them,” he said.
According to him, the council is committed to using the findings to design long-term health support systems for its members.
The Chairman of the Organising Committee, Mr Obas Esiedesa, commended journalists for their active participation in the week-long programme.
He also urged members to continue supporting the council and to uphold the ethical standards of the journalism profession.
Esiedesa said the success of the Press Week reflected unity and commitment within the council, adding that such initiatives would continue to strengthen professional development among journalists.
