NSCDC arraigns 24 suspects over alleged illegal Lithium mining

 

The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) has arraigned 24 persons before a Federal High Court in Abuja over alleged illegal mining activities in Nasarawa State.

The defendants comprise 15 Chinese nationals and nine Nigerians, who were brought before Justice Ofili-Ajumogobia following their arrest on May 16, 2026.

According to the NSCDC Mining Marshals, the suspects were allegedly caught engaging in unauthorised lithium mining operations in Kokona Local Government Area of the state.

The corps said the activity was carried out without the required licence or lawful authorisation.

The corps urther stated that the alleged mining took place within a designated licensed mining area belonging to a registered exploration company, raising concerns over encroachment and illegal exploitation of mineral resources.

The accused persons include several foreign nationals, Nigerian collaborators, and a company allegedly linked to the operation.

The court has adjourned the matter to June 18, 2026, for the commencement of trial.
