Rivers Students Win NLNG Science Competition After Beating 140 Schools

Government Comprehensive Secondary School (GCSS), Borikiri in Port Harcourt has clinched the top prize in the 2026 Nigeria LNG Science Competition, emerging ahead of 140 participating schools across Rivers State.
The announcement was made by Nigeria LNG Limited (NLNG), which said the contest brought together hundreds of students to test their understanding and creativity in science-related fields.
According to NLNG, this year’s edition was designed to strengthen interest in STEM subjects—Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics—while encouraging innovation and healthy academic rivalry among secondary school students.
The company explained that the competition began with 140 schools, but only seven advanced to the final stage after preliminary rounds. In the Science Project category, 42 schools competed, with 11 reaching the final phase.
GCSS Borikiri eventually topped all categories, impressing judges with strong analytical skills, accuracy, and confident presentation throughout the contest.
In the project exhibition segment, Government Girls Secondary School, Orominieke, secured first place, followed by Oginigba Comprehensive Secondary School in second position, while Government Girls Secondary School, Finima-Bonny, finished third.
NLNG’s Manager of Corporate Communication and Public Affairs, Anne-Marie Palmer-Ikuku, described the programme as a long-term investment in developing future scientists and innovators.
She said the competition is structured to move students beyond classroom theory and encourage practical problem-solving abilities in core science subjects.
According to her, the initiative continues to help students build stronger foundations in areas such as Physics, Chemistry, Biology, Mathematics, and Information and Communication Technology.
She also reaffirmed NLNG’s commitment to supporting education and expanding opportunities for young people to develop critical thinking and innovation skills.
The General Manager of External Relations and Sustainable Development at NLNG, Dr Sophia Horsfall, said the programme is aimed at nurturing creativity and preparing students to solve real-world problems.
She added that collaboration with education stakeholders ensures the competition remains impactful and relevant to Nigeria’s development goals.
Rivers State Commissioner for Education, Mr Peters Nwogbo, praised the initiative, describing education as a key driver of scientific advancement.
He said the state government remains committed to improving learning conditions, training teachers, and strengthening STEM education across schools.
He encouraged students to remain focused, noting that their participation in such competitions already sets them apart academically.
Organisers said the introduction of the project exhibition category has further encouraged students to develop practical solutions to environmental and scientific challenges.
