Australia Hold Paraguay to Secure Last 32 Spot

Australia booked their place in the World Cup Round of 32 after a cautious 0–0 draw with Paraguay in San Francisco, a result that ensured both sides progressed from Group D.

The Socceroos needed just a point to finish as group runners-up, while Paraguay entered the match knowing a draw would likely be enough to secure qualification as one of the best third-placed teams.

The match was a largely subdued affair, with both teams adopting a cautious approach and creating few clear chances, in a game that may fuel further debate about the tournament’s expanded format and the inclusion of third-placed qualifiers.

Australia started brighter, with Jackson Irvine forcing an early save from Orlando Gill after just four minutes.

Cristian Volpato also tested the Paraguayan goalkeeper with a curling effort that was tipped over before halftime.

Paraguay offered little attacking threat in the first half, fielding a defensive setup in the absence of suspended star Miguel Almirón following his red card against Turkey.

After the break, Paraguay showed more intent following tactical changes, with substitute Mauricio forcing an early save from Australia’s Patrick Beach.

Julio Enciso provided their main attacking spark, but chances remained limited.

Discipline issues also affected Paraguay, as Diego Gómez picked up a booking that rules him out of their next knockout match, while defender Omar Alderete was forced off with an injury concern.

Late in the game, Australia nearly snatched victory through Jordan Bos, but Paraguay’s best opportunity came deep into stoppage time when Mauricio failed to convert from the edge of the area.

In the group’s other fixture, already eliminated Turkey defeated group winners the United States.
