Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu of Lagos on Saturday led senior government officials in the monthly environmental sanitation exercise held in the Ojuelegba area of Lagos, reinforcing the state’s renewed push for a cleaner and more resilient urban environment.
The exercise, closely monitored by journalists, saw the governor working alongside key cabinet members, including the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, Tokunbo Wahab.
Residents and traders observed as government officials cleared drainage paths, inspected waste disposal points, and assessed environmental compliance in the densely populated Ojuelegba corridor, a known traffic and commercial hub in Lagos.
Ahead of the exercise, the state government had issued reminders urging full public participation in the monthly sanitation routine.
Officials emphasised that the initiative is not merely symbolic but a critical public health intervention aimed at reducing flooding risks and preventing disease outbreaks.
Wahab, in a statement earlier in the week, stressed that environmental cleanliness remained a shared responsibility between government and residents.
He warned that blocked drainages, indiscriminate waste disposal, and poor sanitation practices continue to threaten urban safety, particularly during heavy rainfall periods.
He added that sustained compliance with sanitation guidelines would significantly reduce flooding incidents and improve overall public health outcomes across the state.
The Lagos State Government reaffirmed its commitment to enforcing environmental laws while encouraging civic cooperation to build a more sustainable and livable city.
The Ojuelegba exercise formed part of the state’s long-running monthly sanitation programme, which officials say will continue to be strengthened through enforcement, public education, and community engagement.
