Court Grants Sowore N200m Bail with Strict Conditions

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted bail to African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in his ongoing trial over alleged cybercrime and criminal defamation.
Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that Sowore must provide two sureties in the sum of N200 million each, with one required to be a traditional ruler from his community in Ese-Odo Local Government Area of Ondo State, while the second must own landed property within the Federal Capital Territory.
The court also ordered Sowore to submit his international passport to the Deputy Chief Registrar for safekeeping, pending the conclusion of the trial. It further directed that both sureties must be verified by the prosecution.
The ruling followed Sowore’s earlier bail revocation on June 16, 2026, after he failed to appear in court, leading to a bench warrant for his arrest and his remand order at the Kuje Correctional Centre.
Justice Umar had previously dismissed Sowore’s application seeking his recusal from the case over alleged bias.
During Tuesday’s proceedings, the defence counsel urged the court to release Sowore into his custody to enable him retrieve his passport from the U.S. Embassy in Lagos to meet bail conditions.
The case, being prosecuted by the Department of State Services (DSS), was adjourned until July 6, 2026, for continuation of hearing.
