Court Grants Sowore N200m Bail in Cybercrime Trial

The Federal High Court in Abuja has granted N200 million bail to African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and publisher, Omoyele Sowore, in his ongoing trial over alleged cybercrime offences.
Justice Mohammed Umar ruled that Sowore must produce two sureties in the same amount, with one being a traditional ruler from his community and the other a landed property owner in Abuja.
The court also directed him to deposit his international passport with the Deputy Chief Registrar pending the conclusion of the trial.
The judge said the court exercised its discretion in granting bail because Sowore voluntarily appeared to face the charges instead of waiting to be arrested.
During the hearing, Sowore’s lawyer informed the court that his client’s international passport was with the United States Embassy in Lagos and would be retrieved for submission in line with the bail conditions.
The court granted the defence’s request for Sowore to be released into the custody of his lawyers to enable him meet the bail conditions.
Justice Umar adjourned the case until July 6, when the defence is expected to open its case. Sowore’s earlier bail had been revoked on June 16 after he failed to appear in court.
