ASUU Threatens Action Over Ondo Allowance Delay

The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), Akure Zone, has raised concerns over the non-implementation of key financial provisions of the 2025 Federal Government–ASUU Agreement by the Ondo State Government, warning that continued delay could lead to industrial action in state-owned universities.
Speaking at a press briefing held at the University of Medical Sciences (UNIMED), Ondo, Zonal Coordinator Adeola Egbedokun said the state had failed to honour agreed obligations despite full awareness of the agreement’s terms.
He explained that the 2025 agreement, which became effective from January 1, 2026, covers allowances such as the Consolidated Academic Tools Allowance, Earned Academic Allowance, and Professorial Allowance aimed at improving lecturers’ welfare and academic performance.
ASUU expressed concern that six months into implementation, lecturers in Ondo State-owned universities were yet to receive the approved payments, with arrears continuing to build up.
The union criticised what it described as repeated delays through committee processes, insisting that such arrangements could not replace full implementation of agreed terms.
Egbedokun argued that Ondo State, as an oil-producing state with substantial federal allocations, has the financial capacity to meet its obligations under the agreement.
He warned that further delay could worsen brain drain, reduce staff morale, and negatively affect teaching quality, research output, and accreditation standards in the institutions.
ASUU therefore demanded immediate payment of all outstanding allowances, cautioning that failure to comply may leave the union with no option but to take lawful industrial action.
Responding, Ondo State Commissioner for Education, Igbekele Ajibefun, said the government had already begun steps toward implementation, noting that the agreement also requires domestication at the state level.
He added that other states within the ASUU Akure Zone were also yet to fully implement the agreement, while assuring that Ondo State was working to address the concerns raised
