Speakers, Interior Ministry deepen security partnership

The Conference of Speakers of State Legislatures of Nigeria has pledged to strengthen collaboration with the Federal Ministry of Interior to improve internal security, advance key reforms and enhance service delivery to citizens across the country.

The commitment was made during a courtesy visit by the Chairman of the Conference, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor, who led a delegation of Speakers of State Houses of Assembly to the Minister of Interior, Rt. Hon. Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, at the ministry’s headquarters in Abuja.

Speaking after the meeting, Guwor said the engagement was designed to strengthen cooperation between the Federal Government and state legislatures, particularly in implementing policies that fall within the ministry’s responsibilities.

He noted that state Houses of Assembly play a vital role in domesticating federal laws, providing legislative oversight and supporting initiatives that directly impact citizens at the grassroots.

According to him, the discussions focused on creating stronger institutional links between the ministry and state legislatures to ensure federal programmes achieve greater impact nationwide.

“We had productive discussions on how state legislatures can work more closely with the Ministry to support federal initiatives and improve governance at the grassroots,” Guwor said.

The Conference chairman stressed that stronger collaboration would contribute to improved national security, peace, stability and sustainable development, adding that the ultimate objective is to improve the welfare of Nigerians.

Responding, Minister of Interior Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo welcomed the initiative and commended the Conference of Speakers for taking proactive steps to foster closer cooperation between both levels of government.

The minister reaffirmed the ministry’s commitment to sustained dialogue, information sharing and joint oversight of federal institutions and facilities located across the states.

Both parties agreed to establish formal mechanisms for continuous collaboration aimed at supporting citizen-focused programmes, strengthening governance and promoting effective service delivery throughout the federation.

The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment by both the Conference of Speakers and the Federal Ministry of Interior to uphold constitutional democracy, deepen intergovernmental cooperation and work together in addressing issues of national importance.
