IGP seeks peace before Osun governorship election

Inspector-General of Police, Tunji Disu, has intensified efforts to ensure a peaceful governorship election in Osun State by meeting Governor Ademola Adeleke and other key stakeholders ahead of the August 15 poll.

The high-level security meeting, held at the Government House in Osogbo on Friday, focused on measures to prevent political violence and guarantee a credible electoral process as campaigns enter a crucial stage.

Disu, accompanied by the Assistant Inspector-General of Police in charge of Zone 7, AIG Fasuba Olabode, and other senior police officers, stressed the commitment of the Nigeria Police Force to maintaining law and order before, during and after the election.

The police chief warned that security agencies would take firm action against anyone involved in acts capable of disrupting the peace.

He also appealed to parents and guardians to discourage their children and wards from allowing themselves to be recruited as political thugs.

As part of his visit, the IGP is expected to engage officers of the Osun State Police Command and traditional rulers to strengthen cooperation aimed at delivering a peaceful, free and fair election.

Governor Adeleke, in his remarks, reaffirmed his administration’s opposition to political violence, thuggery and every form of electoral malpractice.

He urged security agencies to remain professional, impartial and non-partisan throughout the election period, insisting that anyone found violating the law should be arrested and prosecuted regardless of political affiliation.

The governor also welcomed the assurance from the Inspector-General that the police would provide adequate security and uphold neutrality throughout the electoral process.

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has fixed August 15 for the governorship election after shifting the exercise from its initial August 8 date to improve logistical arrangements.

According to INEC, Osun State has 1,954,800 registered voters, while 1,594,006 Permanent Voter Cards (PVCs) have been collected.

The commission reminded residents that only eligible voters with valid PVCs would be allowed to cast their ballots and announced that political campaigns will end 24 hours before election day.
