Senator representing Kaduna South, Sunday Katung, has appealed for calm following the death of Mary Habila, urging Nigerians to allow the family to grieve in peace while authorities continue investigations into the circumstances surrounding the tragedy.
In a statement issued through his Media Adviser, Midat Joseph, on Saturday, the lawmaker called on members of the public to avoid comments or actions capable of inflaming tensions or disrupting public order, stressing that justice must be pursued through lawful and transparent processes.
Katung acknowledged the deep grief and emotions generated by Habila’s death but warned that public outrage should not result in actions that could undermine ongoing investigations or jeopardise the search for the truth.
He also appealed to Nigerians to honour the wishes of the bereaved family, who have requested privacy as they mourn and prepare to bury their daughter with dignity.
According to the senator, the family does not want unnecessary intrusion or accusations that could compound their pain during this difficult period.
The appeal, he noted, extended to fellow lawmakers in the National Assembly and numerous sympathisers across Nigeria and abroad who have expressed concern and demanded answers over the incident.
Describing Mary’s death as a heartbreaking loss, Katung offered his condolences to her family, friends and the people of Kaduna South, praying for the peaceful repose of her soul and for God to grant her loved ones the strength to endure the painful loss.
The senator further expressed confidence that security agencies and other relevant authorities would conduct a thorough, impartial and transparent investigation to establish the facts and ensure that justice is served.
He emphasised that the family’s rights and feelings should remain a priority throughout the investigative process.
Katung disclosed that he has personally assured Mary’s parents of his commitment to supporting every lawful effort aimed at ensuring they receive fair treatment and the closure they seek.
Mary Habila was a member of the medical team accompanying the Minister of Works, David Umahi, on a visit to his hometown of Uburu in Ebonyi State, where she was reportedly found dead within the minister’s residential compound.
The incident has attracted widespread public attention, with ongoing police investigations and calls for a comprehensive forensic inquiry into the circumstances surrounding her death.
