Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta has urged NYSC members to embrace skill acquisition programmes to become self-reliant, create jobs and contribute to economic growth.
Oborevwori, represented by Mr Brave Enodeh, Commissioner for Youth Development, gave the charge on Friday during the swearing-in ceremony of 2026 Batch ‘B’ stream II corps members.
The ceremony was held at the NYSC Orientation Camp, Issele-Uku, where the governor encouraged corps members to develop entrepreneurial skills alongside their academic qualifications.
According to him, success in today’s competitive world required more than academic qualifications, as it demanded innovation, adaptability and entrepreneurial skills for sustainable achievements.
He said that for over five decades, the NYSC scheme had strengthened national unity, promoted cultural integration and fostered peaceful coexistence among Nigerians across the country.
The governor urged corps members to uphold the ideals of the scheme, including patriotism, resilience, discipline and selfless service throughout their national assignment.
“The oath you are about to take is a solemn commitment to serve Nigeria with loyalty, discipline, integrity, and selflessness.
“As you begin this journey, remember that while your certificates have brought you this far, your character, values, and choices will determine how far you go.
“Let this service year prepare you for a lifetime of excellence, integrity, and purposeful leadership.
“As you settle into camp life, embrace every activity and every opportunity to build friendships across cultural divides, develop leadership skills, and deepen your commitment to national unity.
“These experiences will remain with you long after your service year. The success of your service year depends on you. Your attitude, discipline, and commitment to duty will determine the impact you make,” he said.
Oborevwori said the state government prioritised the security and welfare of corps members, assuring that it would continue collaborating with NYSC authorities.
“We will continue to work closely with the NYSC to provide a safe and supportive environment throughout your service year,” he said.
Mr John Kwaghe, NYSC Coordinator in Delta, urged corps members to see their deployment to the state as a rare privilege and opportunity.
He commended their conduct, saying they had displayed discipline, loyalty and enthusiasm towards achieving the objectives of the orientation course since arrival.
Kwaghe appreciated the state government for donating 1,500 mattresses for the newly constructed hostel to improve the welfare of corps members deployed to Delta.
“For this, and many other kind gestures, Your Excellency, we are indeed grateful,” he said.
The coordinator said he was aware of approval for the renovation of the multipurpose hall and construction of a befitting pavilion at the camp.
He, however, appealed for immediate commencement of the renovation, noting that the poor condition of the hall affected lectures and indoor activities.
“The bad situation hinders effective discharge of lectures and other indoor activities during this rainy season,” he said.
“I equally want to appeal to His Excellency for the sinking of an additional borehole to address the challenge of inadequate water supply and incessant breakdown of the only borehole on camp,” he added.
Kwaghe disclosed that 2,028 prospective corps members, comprising 949 males and 1,079 females, were duly registered for the orientation course.
