Akpabio links rising insecurity to 2027 elections

Senate President Godswill Akpabio has claimed that increasing insecurity in Nigeria is being fueled by political actors ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Akpabio made the remarks on Tuesday during the commissioning of the Nigeria Revenue Service headquarters in Abuja.
“You are seeing insecurity today; it’s even increasing because the election is coming.
”As soon as the election is over, watch out for the first two weeks; you won’t hear any bomb blasts because people are sponsoring to distract,” he said.
He argued that some individuals were deliberately creating instability to influence the political environment, insisting that such actions would not derail governance under President Bola Tinubu.
The Senate President praised Tinubu’s administration, saying the President remained focused on reforms and would not be distracted by political pressures.
“They don’t know what else to do, the government is attracting support because it is taking very good care of the states,” he said.
Akpabio also referenced the ruling party’s political strength, claiming that the All Progressives Congress had gained significant support across the country, including control of most state governors.
He dismissed opposition claims that Nigeria is drifting toward a one-party state, arguing instead that political parties outside government had failed to organise effectively.
“Where do we belong? How do you win elections when you don’t know how to structure? No political party today is stable in this country,” he added.
The Senate President also commented on controversies surrounding the leadership of the Independent National Electoral Commission, referring to accusations of partisan activity on social media, but maintained that individuals are entitled to personal opinions outside official roles.
Nigerians are expected to head to the polls in less than a year, with political activity already intensifying across parties.
