Oborevwori calls for stronger family values

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta, has called for a renewed commitment to strong family values, unity, love, and peace, describing them as fundamental pillars for meaningful development beyond physical infrastructure.

He made the appeal during the public presentation of a book titled “A Guide to a Successful Marriage”, authored by the Leader of the Delta House of Assembly, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, on Thursday in Asaba.

Represented at the event by his deputy, Sir Monday Onyeme, noted that societies built on stable homes tend to enjoy greater harmony, productivity, and security, stressing that marriage remains central to societal stability.

“Marriage is the bedrock of every stable society. When marriages thrive, families become stronger, society becomes more peaceful, and the state prospers,” he said.

He also observed that many of the social challenges facing communities, such as juvenile delinquency, emotional instability, and elements of insecurity, could often be traced to weakened family structures.

Commending the author, the governor described the book as a valuable intervention that offers guidance for both intending couples and those already married.

“This book is a public good. It offers insight, guidance and wisdom for people preparing for marriage and for those already on the journey,” he added.

In her remarks as chairman of the occasion, former First Lady of the State, Dame Edith Okowa, noted growing concerns about rising divorce cases, urging couples to invest more in understanding and commitment.

She revealed that divorce rates have increased from 1.8 per cent to 2.9 per cent, with Nigeria ranking 11th globally in divorce statistics.

She attributed most marital breakdowns to issues such as infidelity, incompatibility, external family interference, and domestic violence, adding that women account for 62 per cent of divorce cases while men account for 38 per cent.

She encouraged couples to embrace openness, mutual respect, and love as essential tools for sustaining marriages.

The Speaker of the State House of Assembly, Rt. Hon. Dennis Guwor who represented the Chief Launcher High Chief Kestin Pondi, also commended the work, describing it as timely and relevant to strengthening homes and promoting unity.

“This book will inspire couples, strengthen family bonds and promote unity in homes,” he said.

Author of the book, Hon. Emeka Nwaobi, explained that the inspiration behind the publication was spiritual, adding that his aim was to help couples see marriage as a blessing rather than a burden.

He noted that the project also coincided with his 21st wedding anniversary.

A panel of reviewers, including former Permanent Secretary Mr. Okey Offili, Dr. Maria Okocha, and Rev. Fr. Charles Uganwa, examined the central ideas in the book.

They agreed that while conflicts are unavoidable in marriage, the ability to resolve them constructively determined the strength and longevity of the relationship.

The event climaxed with the formal unveiling of the book and cutting of the anniversary cake.

Dignitaries present included the Deputy Speaker of the State House of Assembly Arthur Akpowowo, lawmakers, commissioners, senior government officials, and traditional rulers, including the Obi of Issele-Uku Kingdom, Nduka Ezeagwuna.
