NELFUND denies student loan suspension notice

The Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND) has debunked reports suggesting that it has halted its student loan disbursement programme, describing the widely circulated notice as false and misleading.
In a statement released on Saturday via its official X (formerly Twitter) account, the agency clarified that it has not issued any directive suspending the scheme.
It urged students, beneficiaries, and other stakeholders to ignore the viral message and rely solely on verified communication channels for accurate information.
The clarification comes in response to a document circulating online, which alleged that “due to unforeseen operational circumstances.
”NELFUND has taken the difficult decision to temporarily pause the student loan disbursement programme with immediate effect.”
The message had sparked concern among students who depend on the initiative for access to higher education funding.
Dismissing the claim, NELFUND stated unequivocally, “This document is fake. Kindly disregard the circulating letter on suspension of student loan disbursements. NELFUND has not issued any such directive.”
The agency reiterated its commitment to transparency and continuous engagement with the public, advising that all updates regarding the loan scheme would be communicated through its official platforms.
The student loan programme, introduced by the Federal Government, has attracted significant attention in recent months.
Officials said the initiative has already supported more than one million students nationwide, easing financial barriers to tertiary education.
Government data also indicated that over N1.1 billion has been invested in the scheme so far.
In addition, more than 160,000 young Nigerians have benefited from digital skills training programmes linked to the broader intervention.
As interest in the initiative grows, officials have stressed the importance of verifying information to prevent confusion and misinformation that could undermine public confidence in the programme.
