Lions Club International confers leadership excellence award on Oborevwori

Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta on Thursday received the Lions Club International Icon of Leadership Excellence Award, in recognition of what the organisation described as his outstanding leadership performance and notable developmental achievements in Delta State.
The presentation was made during a courtesy visit to the Governor at Government House, Asaba, by delegates of Lions Club International District 404 Nigeria, led by the Multiple Council Chairperson, Dr. Ibrahim Bello.
The visit also formed part of preparations for the organisation’s 19th Multiple Convention scheduled to take place in Asaba.
Speaking during the presentation, Dr. Bello explained that Asaba was selected as the host city for the international gathering following a careful assessment of key factors such as infrastructure, accessibility, security, and overall environment.
He noted that the prevailing peace and infrastructural development in the state, alongside improved security architecture under Governor Oborevwori’s administration, played a decisive role in the choice.
According to him, the organisation found Delta State suitable for hosting a major international convention due to its growing reputation as a stable and well-managed environment.
Dr. Bello further appreciated the Governor’s support, saying:
“Thank you, Governor Sheriff Oborevwori, for providing the enabling environment that gave us the confidence to choose Asaba, the capital city of Delta State, as the host of this award-winning multiple convention.
” Asaba was carefully selected after considering several important factors, including infrastructure, accessibility, security, and many other key requirements. Thank you for your support and your leadership.”
Dr. Bello also provided insight into the global reach of Lions Club International, describing it as one of the world’s largest humanitarian organisations, with over 1.4 million members operating across more than 200 countries and territories since its establishment in 1917.
He explained that the organisation is involved in more than 90 humanitarian focus areas, including eye care services, childhood cancer support, environmental protection, hunger relief initiatives, disaster response, mental health awareness, youth empowerment, and general healthcare assistance.
Commending the Oborevwori administration, he said the Governor’s development agenda aligns closely with the humanitarian values of Lions International, particularly in areas such as healthcare improvement, social development, security strengthening, and policy reforms.
He also disclosed plans by Lions International Foundation to deepen its intervention programmes in Delta State, especially in healthcare facilities such as the Warri Central Hospital, as well as other community-based initiatives.
In his response, Governor Oborevwori expressed gratitude for the recognition and praised Lions Club International for its consistent humanitarian interventions, especially in healthcare delivery through its eye care programmes and medical outreach activities across the state.
He acknowledged the organisation’s contributions to education, healthcare, and environmental sustainability, noting that their efforts have positively impacted communities in Delta State.
The governor said:“We are delighted that Asaba is hosting this event for the second time, which clearly demonstrates the confidence your organisation has in Delta State.
”Hosting this event will not only boost tourism and economic activities in the state, but will also further project Delta State as a peaceful, welcoming, and investment-friendly destination.”
Oborevwori added that the core values of Lions Club International, compassion, integrity, and selfless service, aligned with the objectives of his administration’s ‘MORE Agenda’, which focuses on meaningful development and improved quality of life for citizens.
He assured the organisation of continued government support for programmes aimed at advancing sustainable development and humanitarian service delivery across the state.
“You are indeed partners in progress, and we are proud of the work you continue to do in service to humanity,” the Governor stated.
