Lagos closes Eko Bridge outbound lane

The Lagos State Government has announced the emergency closure of the outbound carriageway of the Eko Bridge leading towards Lagos Island to allow for urgent safety investigations and repair works.

The indefinite closure is scheduled to begin on Tuesday, May 12, 2026, as the State government move to address concerns surrounding the condition of the bridge and ensure the safety of road users.

The announcement was made on Sunday by the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation, Oluwaseun Osiyemi, who advised motorists to make use of alternative routes throughout the duration of the repairs.

According to the commissioner, motorists travelling through the Apongbon and Ijora Olopa axis have been directed to use the Third Mainland Bridge to reach their destinations and avoid severe traffic disruptions.

Osiyemi, however, clarified that the inward Lagos Island carriageway of the Eko Bridge would remain fully open to vehicular movement despite the closure of the outbound section.

“Adequate traffic and security personnel will be deployed along alternative routes to guide motorists and ensure smooth traffic flow,” the commissioner assured.

The Lagos State government did not disclose how long the emergency repair works and safety inspections would last but stressed that the temporary closure had become necessary to protect motorists and other road users from possible danger.

The planned closure is expected to affect traffic movement across major parts of Lagos Island and its surrounding areas, particularly during peak commuting hours, as thousands of motorists rely daily on the Eko Bridge corridor.

The commissioner said traffic management officials and security operatives would be stationed at strategic points to reduce congestion and assist commuters navigating alternative routes.

Residents and motorists have also been urged to cooperate with traffic officials and comply with diversion directives to minimise delays and maintain order during the repair period.

The Eko Bridge remained one of Lagos’ busiest transport links, connecting the mainland to Lagos Island and serving as a critical route for commercial and private transportation across the state.
