Suspected gas odour hospitalises 90 students in Ogun

More than 90 students have been taken to hospital after a suspected chemical odour spread across parts of Ijebu-Ode in Ogun State, triggering panic and emergency evacuations in several schools.

The incident, which affected pupils and students in multiple schools within the town, prompted swift response from school authorities and emergency services, who moved those impacted to the State Hospital in Ijebu-Ode for medical attention.

Medical personnel reported that many of the students complained of stomach discomfort and nausea following exposure to the unidentified odour.

The situation also drew anxious parents to health facilities as concerns mounted over the source of the smell.

Authorities in the education sector have urged calm, assuring parents that affected students were receiving treatment while investigations continued.

Environmental officials have also begun assessments to determine the origin of the odour and evaluate air quality in the affected areas.

An environmental agency in the state disclosed that monitoring equipment detected unusual gas levels in parts of Ijebu-Ode, describing the readings as significant enough to require further technical analysis.

A joint team of health and environmental experts has since been deployed to the area to continue investigations and advise on safety measures for residents and schools.
