Police arrest 178 suspects in Akwa Ibom

The Akwa Ibom State Police Command says it has arrested 178 suspects over alleged involvement in various criminal activities across the state.
The command also confirmed the recovery of 69 firearms during operations carried out within the period under review.
Commissioner of Police, Baba Azare, disclosed this during a press briefing in Uyo on Monday.
He said the arrests were made in connection with armed robbery, kidnapping, cultism, drug trafficking and illegal possession of firearms.
Azare also said police operatives successfully rescued kidnapped victims from their abductors during recent operations.
He noted that a major breakthrough was recorded with the arrest of a suspected drug kingpin and four accomplices in Mbo Local Government Area.
According to him, the suspects were apprehended at Okobo Ebughu following an intelligence-led operation.
The command also recovered 23 bags of dried weeds suspected to be cannabis during the raid.
Azare explained that the success was achieved through coordinated intelligence gathering, surveillance and tactical police operations.
He said stop-and-search exercises and raids on identified criminal hideouts also contributed to the arrests.
The police commissioner warned criminal elements in the state to desist from crime or face the full weight of the law.
He said there would be no safe haven for those involved in violent crimes, drug trafficking or illegal arms possession.
Azare added that the command would sustain intelligence-led policing and community engagement to maintain peace and security.
He reaffirmed the police commitment to protecting lives and property across Akwa Ibom State.
