ADC declares El-Rufai prisoner of conscience, demands release

The National Executive Committee (NEC) of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) has declared former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, a “prisoner of conscience” and called for his immediate release.
The declaration followed the party’s 101st NEC meeting, where key resolutions were adopted ahead of the 2027 general elections, including approval of primaries, extension of leadership tenure, and restructuring of party organs across the country.
The party said its decisions were contained in a communiqué signed by ADC National Publicity Secretary, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, at the end of the meeting.
“The NEC recognises Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai as a prisoner of conscience and calls for his immediate release,” the communiqué stated.
Beyond the demand for El-Rufai’s release, the NEC also ratified the outcomes of recently conducted primaries for various elective positions across the country, including state assemblies, National Assembly, governorships, and presidential slots.
However, it excluded contests that are still subject to appeals or those yet to be concluded as of May 29, 2026.
Leadership Tenure Extended, Structures Reorganised
The communiqué further stated: “NEC approved the results of all recently conducted primaries for State Houses of Assembly, the National Assembly, State Governors, and the Presidential elections; except those with pending appeals as at May 29, 2026, and those yet to be concluded.”
It also confirmed the extension of the tenure of the National Working Committee (NWC) for an additional 12 months beyond its current mandate.
In addition, the party approved the establishment of caretaker committees at zonal, state, local government, and ward levels, also to serve for a one-year period.
The decisions, according to the party, are part of efforts to stabilise internal structures and position the ADC for stronger participation in the 2027 elections.
