NIMC warns Nigerians over fake NIN portal

The National Identity Management Commission (NIMC) has issued a fresh warning to Nigerians over a fraudulent social media post circulating online, which claims to offer free National Identification Number (NIN) correction services through a fake portal.

The commission described the message and its accompanying links as a phishing scam designed to deceive unsuspecting members of the public and steal personal information.

In a public advisory shared on its official X handle on Tuesday, NIMC cautioned citizens against engaging with the suspicious links, stressing that the National Identity Database remains secure and fully protected from unauthorised access.

“NIMC warns the public against a fraudulent social media post claiming a free ‘Correction Portal’ is open via malicious links. This is a phishing scam,” the commission stated.

It added that Nigerians should ignore any such messages and avoid clicking unverified links circulating on social media platforms.

“We assure citizens that the National Identity Database is secure and fully protected,” the commission said, urging the public to rely strictly on official communication channels for any identity-related services.

NIMC also advised individuals seeking corrections or updates to their National Identification Number records to use only its official self-service platform or visit accredited enrolment centres nationwide.

According to the commission, no legitimate NIN correction service is being offered through unofficial links or social media advertisements.

It urged Nigerians to remain vigilant and report any suspicious messages or websites claiming to provide identity management services outside approved channels.

The agency also stressed the importance of digital safety, noting that fraudsters are increasingly using fake websites and social media campaigns to target personal data and identity information.

The warning comes amid growing concerns over online scams in Nigeria, where cybercriminals frequently deploy phishing tactics to exploit unsuspecting users.

NIMC reaffirmed its commitment to protecting citizens’ data and maintaining the integrity of the national identity system, while urging the public to verify all information through official sources before taking action.
