LPPC Suspends Ozekhome’s SAN Rank

The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC) has suspended Chief Mike Ozekhome from the rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN).
The decision was reached during the committee’s 173rd General Meeting held on Tuesday.
The LPPC said the suspension would remain in effect pending the conclusion of disciplinary proceedings against the senior lawyer.
According to the committee, the action was taken under Paragraph 26(6) of the Guidelines for the Conferment of the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.
The committee stated that the disciplinary matter was currently before its Disciplinary and Ethics Sub-Committee.
Other related proceedings involving Ozekhome are also being considered.
The announcement was contained in a statement issued by the Chief Registrar of the Supreme Court of Nigeria.
The statement was signed by Kabir Akanbi, who also serves as Secretary of the Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee.
The LPPC said the suspension was necessary to protect the integrity and prestige associated with the SAN rank.
It noted that the measure would remain in place while due consideration is given to the issues under review.
In the statement, the committee confirmed its decision regarding the senior lawyer.
“The Legal Practitioners’ Privileges Committee (LPPC), at its 173rd General Meeting held on 23rd June 2026, approved the suspension of Chief Mike Ozekhome from the Rank of Senior Advocate of Nigeria.”
The committee further directed Ozekhome to stop presenting himself as a holder of the prestigious title.
“Accordingly, Chief Mike Ozekhome shall refrain from parading himself, presenting himself, or otherwise holding himself out as a Senior Advocate of Nigeria pending the final determination of the disciplinary proceedings.”
The LPPC reiterated its commitment to maintaining discipline and ethical standards within the legal profession.
It stressed that preserving public confidence in the legal system remains one of its primary responsibilities.
“The LPPC remains committed to upholding the highest standards of professional ethics, integrity, and discipline within the legal profession.”
The committee added that it would continue protecting the reputation and credibility of the SAN rank.
It said the distinction must continue to command public confidence, respect, and professional excellence.
No timeline was provided for the conclusion of the disciplinary proceedings.
The committee also did not disclose details of the allegations being considered against the senior advocate.
The development represents a significant step in the ongoing disciplinary process involving Ozekhome.
Further decisions would depend on the outcome of the proceedings before the relevant committee.
