Obi Urges Leaders to Prioritise National Survival

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress, Peter Obi, has called on Nigeria’s political class to place the country’s worsening security and economic challenges above partisan interests, insisting that national survival must outweigh the race for power.

Obi made the appeal after completing his nomination inquiry form at the Abuja office of the Independent National Electoral Commission, describing the experience as one that provoked deeper reflection on leadership responsibility and accountability.

According to a statement by his media office, he said some of the questions in the INEC form highlighted the importance of transparency and raised broader concerns about the quality of leadership needed to confront Nigeria’s multiple crises.

Writing on social media platform X, Obi questioned the priorities of Nigeria’s leaders, stressing that the current situation in the country demands urgent collective attention rather than political rivalry.

He noted that one particular question in the form—about whether an aspirant had ever been declared of unsound mind—prompted wider reflection on judgment, competence, and the seriousness of those seeking public office.

Obi argued that with insecurity, economic hardship, and widespread hardship affecting citizens, leaders should be focused on practical solutions rather than political positioning ahead of elections.

He further called for inclusive engagement among political actors and stakeholders to address what he described as existential threats facing the country.

The former Anambra State governor maintained that safeguarding Nigeria’s future should remain the top priority over individual or party ambitions as the 2027 political cycle draws closer.
