Wabara, Ben Obi Rally Diaspora for 2027 Polls

Former Senate President, Adolphus Wabara, and former vice-presidential candidate of the Action Congress, Senator Ben Obi, have intensified calls for Nigerians at home and abroad to unite in defence of credible elections ahead of 2027.
Both political figures are currently in the United States holding high-level engagements with members of the Nigerian diaspora, aimed at building a shared strategy to strengthen democratic governance and protect electoral integrity.
Wabara said the consultations, which cut across party lines, are focused on mobilising “progressive Nigerians” to defend democratic institutions, preserve political pluralism, and resist what he described as attempts to weaken the country’s multi-party system.
He expressed concern over rising tensions in the political space, alleging growing pressure on opposition voices, declining public trust in the electoral umpire, and broader risks to democratic stability.
The discussions, according to him, also centre on concerns about the conduct of the Independent National Electoral Commission and fears over the shrinking space for democratic participation.
Wabara warned that Nigeria’s democracy is facing severe strain, describing its current condition as critical and calling for urgent action to prevent further deterioration.
He said participants in the ongoing meetings have pushed for a united front to “rescue” democratic institutions, prevent what they termed state capture, and ensure that the will of voters is protected in future elections.
The consultations are expected to continue as stakeholders seek a broader consensus on reforms and strategies to strengthen electoral credibility ahead of the 2027 general elections.
