The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has arrested two suspected producers of counterfeit alcoholic drinks during a major enforcement operation in Mushin, Lagos State.
The agency said the suspects were apprehended after investigators raided shops, storage facilities and an illegal production centre where fake alcoholic beverages were allegedly being manufactured and packaged.
Speaking during the operation, NAFDAC’s Director of Investigation and Enforcement, Dr Martins Iluyomade, said officers recovered large quantities of suspected counterfeit alcoholic drinks, including products branded as premium local and international beverages.
The enforcement team also confiscated bottles, labels, packaging materials and production equipment believed to have been used in the illegal operation.
According to Iluyomade, the suspects admitted their involvement during interrogation, while all seized products and materials had been secured as evidence pending further investigation.
He said the agency was determined to ensure those responsible faced prosecution.
In a related operation, NAFDAC uncovered more than 450 cartons of expired salad cream stored at two locations in Oke Arin Market.
The products, which expired in 2024, were immediately evacuated to prevent them from reaching consumers, while the owner was invited for questioning.
Several shops found selling unregistered and banned products were also sealed during the enforcement exercise.
Iluyomade said the operation reflected the agency’s resolve to dismantle networks involved in producing and distributing unsafe products.
He noted that NAFDAC had recently secured convictions against fake drug dealers and expressed confidence that more prosecutions would follow as other cases progressed in court.
“The enforcement underscores NAFDAC’s unwavering commitment to safeguarding the health of Nigerians,” he said.
He urged manufacturers, distributors and traders dealing in regulated products to comply fully with NAFDAC’s guidelines to protect public health.
