Governor Abba Yusuf of Kano State has expressed the state’s readiness to establish a state police system, describing it as a major step towards improving security and protecting residents.
The governor made the declaration during the inauguration of the Inter-Agencies Task Force on Drug Abuse and Trafficking at the Government House in Kano.
Yusuf said the proposed state police would complement the activities of the Nigeria Police Force rather than compete with the existing security structure.
According to him, both institutions would have a shared responsibility of maintaining law and order, safeguarding lives and property, and strengthening public confidence in security operations.
The governor emphasised the need for closer cooperation among security agencies, noting that effective intelligence gathering and faster response to threats were essential to tackling insecurity.
He said Kano possessed the required human resources, institutional capacity, and political commitment to operate a state police system once the necessary constitutional provisions are established.
Yusuf reaffirmed his administration’s support for initiatives aimed at improving Nigeria’s security architecture and creating a safer environment for citizens.
Speaking on the newly inaugurated task force, the governor said the move reflects Kano State’s determination to confront drug abuse and illicit trafficking through stronger collaboration among relevant agencies and stakeholders.
He charged members of the task force to discharge their responsibilities with professionalism, discipline, and integrity, stressing that the fight against drug-related crimes requires sustained commitment and effective coordination.
