Journalists in Delta State have received a major boost to their field operations as Governor Sheriff Oborevwori presented a brand-new 18-seater Toyota Hiace bus to the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Delta State Council.
The vehicle, presented in Asaba by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Sir Festus Ahon, to NUJ Chairman, Comrade Churchill Oyowe, is expected to ease the movement of journalists across the state and strengthen the union’s capacity to carry out its professional responsibilities.
Speaking during the presentation, Ahon said the gesture reflected the administration’s recognition of the media as a vital partner in governance and development.
“On behalf of His Excellency, the Governor of Delta State, Rt. Hon. Sheriff Oborevwori, I have the honour of presenting this brand-new bus to the Nigeria Union of Journalists, Delta State Council, for the use of the union and journalists across the state,” he said.
He noted that journalists play a crucial role in public enlightenment, accountability and keeping citizens informed about government programmes and development initiatives.
Ahon expressed confidence that the intervention would deepen the existing relationship between the Delta State Government and the NUJ while creating room for stronger collaboration in the interest of the people.
Receiving the bus, Oyowe expressed appreciation to Governor Oborevwori, describing the gesture as a practical demonstration of leadership that responds to the needs of institutions and professionals.
“We want to say a very big thank you to His Excellency for this gesture. We do not take it for granted.
”This is yet another demonstration of a leadership that understands the needs of institutions and professionals who contribute to the development of the state,” the NUJ chairman said.
Oyowe said the new vehicle would make it easier for journalists to cover assignments across Delta, particularly those requiring movement to different communities.
He also acknowledged the contributions of Ahon, Secretary to the State Government, Dr. Kingsley Emu, and Commissioner for Works (Rural Roads) and Public Information, Mr. Charles Aniagwu, toward making the intervention possible.
Beyond the bus, Oyowe commended the governor for the ongoing provision of solar power at the NUJ Secretariat in Asaba, describing the support as part of a broader commitment to improving the working environment of journalists.
“We believe that His Excellency’s administration is still unfolding. The developmental strides of this administration are still unfolding, and at the end of the day, there will be remarkable and spectacular achievements to speak about across Delta State,” he said.
The NUJ chairman urged the governor to remain focused on his development agenda, assuring him that the union appreciated the administration’s support for the media and its commitment to the advancement of Delta State.
He further expressed hope that the governor’s tenure would be remembered for tangible improvements in the lives of the people.
“At the end of his tenure, we want to be able to say, with pride, that there was a Governor who truly cherished the people of Delta State and worked tirelessly for their progress,” Oyowe said.
The presentation reinforces the value of constructive government-media relations, particularly in promoting effective communication, transparency and credible coverage of policies and development across the state.
