AGF rejects claims of Christian genocide in Nigeria

The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi (SAN), has dismissed assertions that Christians are being systematically targeted in Nigeria, insisting that no religious group is under persecution.

Speaking on Saturday at an event in Erin-Ile, Oyun Local Government Area, Kwara State, Fagbemi acknowledged the country’s security challenges but emphasised that violent attacks affect multiple regions and communities, not a single faith.

“There is no Christian genocide in Nigeria. There is no persecution of any religion, sect, or ethnic nationality,” Fagbemi stated.

He highlighted that predominantly Muslim states like Zamfara and Sokoto have also suffered repeated attacks, noting that “violence is not targeted at any religion.”

The AGF reaffirmed that the Federal Government is intensifying its efforts to combat terrorism, banditry, and other forms of criminality nationwide.

He urged Nigerians to be patient with President Bola Tinubu’s administration, stressing that current reforms are designed to strengthen the country’s foundation for development.

Fagbemi’s comments come in response to recent accusations by U.S. Senator Ted Cruz and former President Donald Trump, who warned of an alleged existential threat to Christianity in Nigeria.

The Federal Government has consistently denied such claims.

At the same event, Fagbemi also lauded the newly appointed Elerin of Erin-Ile, highlighting the monarch’s experience and potential to support local development.

Governor AbdulRahman AbdulRazaq, represented by the Commissioner for Local Government and Chieftaincy Affairs, Ibrahim Bata, underscored the role of traditional institutions as strategic governance partners.

Oba Jimoh Adesoye pledged to focus on youth-led initiatives in agriculture, healthcare, food security, and security, with the beaded crown presented to him by the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi.
