Cross River magistrates resume strike over unmet welfare demands

The Cross River State chapter of the Magistrates Association of Nigeria (MAN) on Monday resumed its suspended strike, citing the state government’s failure to meet outstanding welfare demands.

The decision comes despite earlier assurances from the government, which had temporarily halted the industrial action in late January.

According to a statement signed by MAN Chairman Godwin Onah and Secretary Solomon Abuo, the magistrates were compelled to resume the strike after the government failed to address several critical issues, including promotions, financial benefits, and provision of official vehicles.

“While we acknowledge the government’s action on the implementation of promotions and regularisation of magistrates, other key demands remain unaddressed, causing hardship and dissatisfaction among our members,” the statement said.

The association had initially issued a strike notice on February 2, warning that failure to meet their demands could trigger an indefinite industrial action.

The decision to resume the strike followed a general meeting on January 30, during which members expressed frustration at what they described as government inaction.

MAN also highlighted the disparity in monthly allowances, noting that magistrates in Cross River receive N15,000 monthly imprest, compared to N200,000–N250,000 in neighboring states.

The group further decried the dilapidated state of magistrate courts across the state.

“The unresolved issues have created disaffection and threaten the smooth administration of justice in Cross River,” the association stated.

On Monday morning, officials from the state government, led by Chief of Staff Emmanuel Ironbar and Attorney-General Ededem Ani, met with the association to discuss the concerns.

Secretary Abuo confirmed the meeting but noted that the magistrates are awaiting the government’s final pronouncement before deciding whether the strike will continue.

“We have met with the government, and they requested time to deliberate and provide a response. The outcome of this will determine the next steps regarding the strike,” Abuo said.

The resumption of industrial action underscores ongoing tensions between judicial officers and the Cross River State government over welfare provisions and operational resources, highlighting broader concerns about support for magistrates who play a pivotal role in maintaining justice and law enforcement across the state.
