FG begins implementation of national policy on cosmetics safety, health

The Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare has commenced state-level implementation of the National Policy on Cosmetics Safety and Health (NPCSH), starting with a stakeholder engagement in Lagos State.
The initiative aims to strengthen regulation of cosmetic production, improve product labeling, and raise public awareness about health risks from unsafe cosmetic products.
Representatives from multiple agencies, including NAFDAC, the Federal Ministry of Environment, the Nigeria Customs Service, and the World Health Organisation, joined the event.
The official emphasised that individuals and companies violating cosmetics safety guidelines would face sanctions.
Officials noted that cosmetics safety is a shared responsibility among regulators, manufacturers, and consumers, and the government remains committed to enforcing compliance across the country.
The policy, which would run over five years, is designed to align Nigeria’s cosmetics sector with international standards and reduce health risks associated with banned or unsafe products.
In February 2026, NAFDAC uncovered a warehouse in Lagos stocked with banned, unregistered, and substandard cosmetic products valued at over N3 billion, including soaps like Crusader and E45, perfumes, body oils, and cooking oils.
All items were seized to prevent distribution, and investigations are ongoing.
