Afenifere warns against violence ahead of 2027 polls

The pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, has warned political actors against violence, hate speech, and inflammatory rhetoric as Nigeria moves closer to the 2027 general elections, urging all stakeholders to uphold democratic values and civility.

The warning was issued at the end of its caucus meeting held at the Akure residence of its leader, Chief Reuben Fasoranti, where the group reviewed current political developments and rising tensions ahead of the polls.

In a communiqué signed by its National Publicity Secretary, Jare Ajayi, the organisation expressed concern that unchecked political rivalry could escalate into violence and threaten national stability if not urgently addressed.

The group urged politicians and political parties to avoid the use of thuggery, smear campaigns, and other undemocratic practices during campaigns, insisting that elections must not become a trigger for instability.

Beyond electoral matters, Afenifere raised serious concerns over worsening insecurity across the South-West and other parts of the country, describing the situation as deeply alarming and unacceptable.

It called on governors in the region to strengthen local security structures and accelerate efforts toward the establishment of state police, which it said would improve rapid response to emerging threats.

The organisation also advocated enhanced collaboration among neighbouring states such as Kwara, Kogi, Edo, and Delta, noting that criminal groups often exploit forest corridors that cut across state boundaries to evade security operations.

Afenifere further urged a combination of kinetic and non-kinetic strategies to tackle insecurity, including intelligence sharing and efforts to expose individuals allegedly collaborating with criminal networks.

It warned that the rising wave of killings in Yorubaland and other parts of Nigeria should not be ignored, describing it as part of what it termed a “genocidal agenda” and calling for urgent, coordinated intervention by security agencies.

While acknowledging steps taken by the administration of President Bola Tinubu, including engagements with security chiefs, the group insisted that more decisive action is needed to restore public confidence and ensure lasting peace.

On governance reforms, Afenifere restated its long-standing call for restructuring, arguing that a more decentralised system remains key to building a stable and equitable federation.

In a lighter development, the organisation announced plans to celebrate the 100th birthday of its leader, Chief Fasoranti, on May 11, 2026, with expected attendance from prominent political and public figures across the country.
