IATA names Keyamo among Africa’s top aviators

The International Air Transport Association (IATA) has recognised Nigeria’s Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, Festus Keyamo, as one of Africa’s four most prominent aviators.
The announcement was made on Wednesday by IATA’s Regional Vice President for Africa and the Middle East, Kamil Alawadhi, during a special session at the IATA Focus Africa Conference held in Addis Ababa.
According to Alawadhi, the recognition was based on Keyamo’s policy direction, strategic reforms, and commitment to aligning Nigeria’s aviation sector with global standards.
He highlighted Nigeria’s implementation of the Cape Town Convention and the IDERA framework, as well as its strong 91.4 per cent safety rating by the International Civil Aviation Organisation (ICAO), as key indicators of progress.
“This recognition reflects purposeful leadership, bold reforms, and measurable progress. Nigeria’s aviation sector is clearly on a transformative path,” Alawadhi said.
He added that Keyamo’s engagement with international stakeholders and efforts to resolve longstanding industry challenges have boosted investor confidence and improved operational stability in the sector.
Other aviation leaders recognised alongside Keyamo include Teresia Malokwe, Poppy Khosa, and Mesfin Tasew.
Keyamo’s Special Adviser on Media and Communications, Tunde Moshood, said the honour reflects growing continental recognition of Nigeria’s aviation reforms.
“Keyamo’s inclusion in this elite group further reinforces Nigeria’s rising profile as a key driver of aviation transformation on the continent,” he said, noting that the minister’s leadership has been defined by policy clarity, international collaboration, and decisive reforms.
The recognition comes amid recent improvements in Nigeria’s aviation safety record, with the country achieving a 91.4 per cent rating following an ICAO Coordinated Validation Mission.
The assessment, one of Nigeria’s highest in decades, followed a comprehensive audit of aviation agencies and airlines, evaluating safety oversight, operational standards, and regulatory compliance.
President Bola Tinubu had earlier described the rating as “impressive,” stating that it enhances Nigeria’s attractiveness for investment in aviation infrastructure and operations.
The IATA Focus Africa Conference, themed “Elevating Aviation Safety, Connectivity and Operational Efficiency in Africa,” continues to serve as a platform for advancing innovation and collaboration across the continent’s aviation industry.
