Protect power assets, Delta Govt. tells communities

Delta Government has urged communities benefiting from electrification projects to protect electricity infrastructure from vandalism and sabotage.

The Commissioner for Power and Energy, Michael Anoka, made the appeal during a courtesy visit by leaders of Utagba-Ogbe community to his office on Wednesday in Asaba.

Anoka expressed concern over persistent attacks on electricity facilities across the state, describing the trend as a major challenge.

He identified cables, transformers, solar batteries and other equipment as common targets of vandals.

The commissioner said the government has invested heavily in providing and maintaining electricity infrastructure for residents.

He noted that electrification projects required extensive planning and engineering assessments before implementation.

According to him, vandalism has imposed huge financial burdens on the government and delayed electricity projects.

Anoka warned those involved in sabotaging public facilities to desist or face legal consequences.

He called on community leaders and residents to work with government and security agencies to safeguard public assets.

The commissioner reaffirmed Gov. Sheriff Oborevwori’s commitment to expanding infrastructure and improving electricity supply across the state.

He stressed that protecting electricity facilities is a shared responsibility that requires active community participation.

Responding, leader of delegation, Mr Godwin Edeme thanked the commissioner for receiving the group.

Edeme assured the government that the community would protect electricity infrastructure within its area.

He pledged continued cooperation with relevant authorities to prevent vandalism and support development initiatives.
