Iyabo Obasanjo Quits APC Over Alleged Disrespect, Exclusion

A former Ogun Central senator and daughter of former President Olusegun Obasanjo, Iyabo Obasanjo, has resigned from the All Progressives Congress (APC), citing what she described as persistent disrespect, rejection, and unfair treatment by the party’s leadership in Ogun State.

In a resignation letter dated May 31 and addressed to the Ogun APC Chairman, Chief Yemi Sanusi, she said her decision followed repeated experiences of exclusion within the party.

She criticised the consensus process that produced Senator Adeola Solomon (Yayi) as the APC governorship candidate for the 2027 Ogun State election, describing it as inconsistent with the party’s guidelines.

According to her, she was not consulted or involved before the candidate was announced.

Obasanjo also alleged that some of her supporters were prevented from accessing the venue where the candidate emerged and were subjected to intimidation.

Although she initially accepted the outcome in the interest of party unity and publicly congratulated Adeola, she said tensions continued afterward.

She explained that the senator later met with her supporters and received three requests, but failed to respond for over two months despite promising to do so within a week.

She said this reflected a broader pattern of disregard for her role in the party, adding that when “disrespect is the only dish served,” leaving becomes necessary.

Despite her resignation, she expressed appreciation to President Bola Tinubu, the Ogun APC leadership, and other party stakeholders for their courtesy during her time in the party.

Obasanjo had returned to active politics earlier this year after registering as an APC member in Ward 11, Ibogun, Ifo Local Government Area, and had shown interest in contesting the Ogun governorship ticket before exiting the party.
