Nigeria Records 102,025 New HIV Cases in 2025

Nigeria recorded 102,025 new HIV infections across the 36 states and the Federal Capital Territory in 2025, according to the Federal Ministry of Health and Social Welfare’s State of the Health of the Nation Report.

The report showed that Lagos State led with 10,430 new cases, followed by Rivers with 6,287 and Kano with 6,106, highlighting persistent geographical spread of the disease despite ongoing prevention efforts.

Akwa Ibom recorded 5,413 cases, while Taraba, Benue and Anambra reported 4,854, 4,804 and 4,468 respectively. Kaduna, Adamawa and the Federal Capital Territory also featured among the highest-burden areas.

Other states with over 2,000 new infections included Cross River, Sokoto, Abia, Imo, Delta, Borno, Ogun, Plateau, Niger and Ebonyi.

At the lower end, Ekiti recorded 462 cases, while Bayelsa, Gombe, Osun, Kwara, Enugu, Yobe, Katsina and Kebbi also posted relatively lower figures.

The report noted that the figures underscore the need for strengthened interventions to curb transmission nationwide.

The Federal Government said it has continued to support HIV response efforts, including approval for procurement of antiretroviral drugs and expanded treatment programmes.

Nigeria also recently received doses of lenacapavir, a long-acting injectable HIV prevention drug, as part of a Global Fund-supported initiative aimed at strengthening prevention and treatment coverage.
