Pensioners threaten nationwide protest over unpaid pensions

The National Association of Retirees of State Governments has threatened a nationwide protest on Wednesday, April 29, 2026, if state governors fail to urgently review pension payments in line with labour laws.

The union issued the warning in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, during the inauguration of its interim state executive.

Its president, Simon Anchaver, said pensioners across the country are facing irregular and inadequate payments despite existing legal frameworks meant to protect their welfare.

The association called on all 36 state governors to prioritise prompt and consistent payment of pensions and gratuities.

It also urged President Bola Tinubu to establish a dedicated Ministry for Pension Affairs to ensure stable annual budgetary allocations for retirees.

The union praised the Nasarawa State Government for releasing about N7 billion to clear pension arrears and gratuities, describing it as a positive example.

National Secretary Bipre Ndiomu said the union, recently registered, is expanding its presence nationwide and would continue to push for reforms.

He said pensioners should not be made to suffer after years of public service.

Bayelsa State Head of Service, represented by senior officials, said the government remains open to dialogue on outstanding pension issues.

The newly inaugurated Bayelsa chairman, Bazigha Tanwei, pledged regular engagement with members and sustained advocacy to ensure arrears are cleared.

The union warned that failure to act on its demands could lead to coordinated protests across the country.
