Police arrest officer over alleged killing in Delta

The Nigeria Police Force has arrested a police officer following the alleged killing of a 28-year-old man, Mene Ogidi, in Effurun, Delta State, an incident that has sparked public outrage after a viral video circulated online.
In a statement, the Delta State Police Command confirmed what it described as an “extra-judicial killing” that occurred on April 26, 2026, during an operation by officers attached to the Area Command in Effurun.
According to the Command, the deceased was allegedly intercepted while attempting to transport a parcel said to contain a Beretta pistol and four rounds of ammunition.
It stated that during the operation, the team leader, identified as ASP Nuhu Usman, allegedly violated established operational procedures and discharged his weapon, resulting in the death of the suspect.
“The police officer leading the team, ASP Nuhu Usman, in clear violation of Force Order 237 and the Standard Operating Procedure of the Nigeria Police Force, discharged his firearm, leading to the death of the suspect,” the statement said.
The Command added that the officer has since been arrested, queried, and transferred to the Force Headquarters in Abuja for disciplinary proceedings before the Force Disciplinary Committee, which may lead to prosecution.
Commissioner of Police, Yemi Oyeniyi, condemned the incident, assuring that the Command would not tolerate misconduct or abuse of power by its personnel.
He described the incident as regrettable and extended condolences to the family of the deceased, while urging residents to remain calm as investigations continue.
The Command also reaffirmed its commitment to accountability, stating that it maintains “zero tolerance for lawlessness, recklessness and extra-judicial conduct.”
The development has further intensified public scrutiny of police conduct in Nigeria, particularly regarding allegations of excessive use of force during operations.
