Kano Approves N1.5bn for Mass Wedding Programme

The Kano State Government has allocated N1.5 billion for a mass wedding programme aimed at supporting 1,500 couples across the state.

The initiative would be coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board as preparations for the event gather momentum.

Hisbah Commander General, Aminu Daurawa, disclosed the plan during a press conference in Kano on Monday.

He said the programme is designed to assist low-income individuals who cannot afford marriage expenses.

According to Daurawa, the initiative also seeks to reduce social challenges associated with delayed marriages.

Each beneficiary couple is expected to receive support valued at N1 million.

The package would cover household items including beds, mattresses, bedsheets, pillows, cupboards and food supplies.

The programme also includes economic empowerment support for newly married couples.

Under the arrangement, each bride would receive N100,000 to establish a small business.

The groom would also receive N100,000 to assist with the payment of marriage dowry.

Daurawa said the mass wedding fulfils a campaign promise made by Governor Abba Yusuf.

He noted that the government remained committed to improving the welfare of vulnerable residents.

The Hisbah Board has introduced guidelines for participants in the scheme.

One of the conditions requires couples to involve the board before pursuing divorce proceedings.

The commander also advised intending couples to undergo genotype testing before marriage.

He stressed that compatibility screening can help reduce cases of sickle cell disorder among children.

Daurawa urged families to embrace medical counselling and responsible marriage practices for healthier homes and communities.
