Peter Obi promises equal partnership role for vice president

Presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has pledged that his running mate, Rabiu Kwankwaso, will not serve as a ceremonial deputy but as an active and equal partner in governance if elected in 2027.

Obi made the commitment while formally accepting the party’s nomination and confirming Kwankwaso as his vice-presidential candidate.

He said his administration would break from what he described as the tradition of sidelining vice presidents, stressing that his government would be built on joint decision-making, consultation, and shared responsibility at the highest level.

According to him, key national decisions would not be taken unilaterally, but through continuous engagement between the president and vice president as part of an inclusive leadership structure.

Obi described the proposed arrangement as part of a wider governance philosophy aimed at promoting cooperation, accountability, and effective delivery of public service.

He also reiterated his campaign message that a “New Nigeria is Possible,” noting that the political movement goes beyond individual ambition and is centered on national renewal and rebuilding public trust.

On national security, the NDC candidate identified insecurity as a major priority, pledging stronger and more decisive action to safeguard lives and property if elected.
